This is a recipe that takes me back to my childhood. My mom made these potatoes all the time when I was growing up. They are so easy, so good, and very versatile. There is just something about these potatoes that is so comforting. They pair well with any meal, and I love making them. If you can make mashed potatoes, then you can make these.
Let’s get started.
INGREDIENTS:
3-4 medium potatoes – peeled and cubed
Water – to cover potatoes
2 Tsp – salt
1/2 to 3/4 C. Milk
1 Tbso. Flour
3 Tbsp Water
Pepper – to taste
DIRECTIONS:
- Peel your potatoes and add them to a pot. Fill with water just enough to cover the potatoes by 1 inch. Add the salt and stir.
- Bring to a boil and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until the potatoes are just tender. NOT MUSHY. Tender. Check them with a fork, and if the fork releases easily from the potato, they are done.
- Drain most of the water from the pot and leave just a bit of the liquid.
- Add the milk and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat.
- Mix the flour and the 3 tbsp of water together and add to the potatoes. Stir and cook until thickened. This should take about 5 minutes.
- Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve as desired.
NOTES:
- I love adding extra seasoning to this. I often add minced garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, seasoning salt, and sometimes fresh herbs. You can season this however you want. This is just the basic recipe, so you can add whatever seasoning you like.
- Sometimes I add a bit of cheddar cheese on top.
- This is a very simple but old-style recipe.
- This is like a chunky mashed potato version, but it is so good. The sauce thickens so nicely to make like a gravy with the potatoes. It is wonderful. Nostalgia in a bowl for sure.
- My grandpa made these for my mom and her siblings growing up all the way back in the 1950’s. It was something my grandpa made a lot. It was one of those recipes that got families through some hard times.
