Sausage And Kraut

Sausage And Kraut

If you like kraut and sausage then you are going to love this one! It is so easy, slightly spicy, and so good. Something happens to the kraut when it is cooked with all of these wonderful spices and the sausage that just makes it so delicious.

This is a versatile recipe and we have it in two different ways. By itself or on sub-buns. Either way, it is so good. Let me share with you how I make it.

INGREDIENTS:

1 pkg. Kielbasa sausage – halved and cut into 2-inch pieces
1 can sour kraut
1/2 C. chicken broth
1/2 Tsp. caraway seeds
1/4 to 1/2 Tsp. red pepper flakes
1/2 Onion – thinly sliced or cubed
1/4 Tsp. Mustard powder
Salt and pepper – to taste
Olive oil

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a large skillet over medium-low heat add the olive oil and let it come to temp.
  2. Add the sausage and sear on both sides until golden. Remove to a plate and set aside.
  3. Add the onion and a bit of salt and pepper. Stir and cook until the onion is tender. About 5 minutes or so.
  4. Add the caraway seeds, red pepper flakes, and mustard powder and stir to combine. Let toast for about 30 seconds.
  5. Add the sour kraut and broth and stir to combine. Let this cook for about 15 minutes stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  6. Add the sausage and cook for another 15 minutes stirring occasionally. The sour kraut will get a bit browned around the edges but you do not want it to burn.
  7. Remove from heat, check the seasoning, and serve as desired.
  • You can serve this as is with any side dishes that you prefer or enjoy.
  • You can also serve this on a sub bun as a sandwich with a bit of mustard and fries. Either way, it is absolutely delicious.
  • You can use any style of sausage or kielbasa that you and your family enjoy.
