Sour Cream Taco Shop Sauce

This is a very easy and flavorful sauce that I like to make when I make tacos or any Mexican-style dish. It is very easy to make, and you can whip it up in under 2 minutes. When I made this, I just threw things together with some sour cream to top our tacos. Everyone loved it, so I just kept making it the same way, for the most part. This is my basic recipe, which you can tailor to your taste and heat preference.

So let’s make some sauce.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 C. Sour Cream (or you can use plain Greek yogurt)
3-4 Tbsp. Pickled Jalapeno juice ( I use Mazzetta tamed medium or hot jalapeños) * See notes
Salt and pepper – to taste
1/4 Tsp. Chili Powder
1/8 Tsp. Cumin
1/4 Tsp. Cayenne Pepper (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together all ingredients until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning to desired preference.
  2. You can store in a bowl with a lid, or you can add to a squeeze bottle. Store in the fridge for up to 1 week.

NOTES

  • With this recipe, you can use either sour cream or plain Greek yogurt. They both work well with this recipe. I use either one depending on my goals for the day and which one I feel like using.
  • Now, with the pickled jalapenos, you can use the “tamed” jalapenos or regular jalapenos. Either works great with this, and I interchange them often depending on how spicy I want the sauce. I always have either one in the fridge or pantry. If you do not like or can not have jalapenos you can leave it out and add lemon or lime juice. It also works. It will give it a different flavor, but it is still good. Don’t like either one… You can use water or cream to thin it out. It won’t give you that tangy flavor profile, but it will still work.
  • With the cayenne, you can leave this out if you do not want it spicy. This is up to you. Sometimes we want it spicy and other times we don’t. So just add it if you want to.
  • I use a small amount of chili powder and cumin because it will become overpowering very quickly. So add the recommended amount and adjust from there. If you want it more chili-forward, add more chili powder. If you want it more cumin-forward, add more cumin. Adjust to your taste.
  • If you like, you can omit the chili powder and cumin and opt for elote seasoning. I have done this quite a few times, and it is very good. I would add about 1/2 to 1 tsp. Again, if you use this instead, add a small amount and adjust from there.
