Chocolate Gravy

Featured: Biscuits with chocolate gravy, waffles with maple syrup (for picture), bacon, and eggs.

You probably have never heard of chocolate gravy if you are not from the South. This is not something you would put on a dessert like pie or ice cream but you actually put it on pancakes, biscuits, or waffles. It is also not served every day. It is more like a special occasion thing. This is typically served during family gatherings such as birthdays, Thanksgiving, or Christmas because it is so rich.

Now I know that the name may have turned you off to the idea of chocolate gravy but don’t knock it till you try it and whatever you do always keep it for special occasions or for that Sunday breakfast you occasionally have with family. lol. With that being said let me share with you how to make it.

INGREDIENTS:

1 C. Sugar
3 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder
3 Tbsp. Flour
1 Tsp. Baking Soda
1/4 Tsp. Salt
1 Tbsp. Butter
1 1/2 C. Milk

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a bowl or a dry skillet whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Slowly whisk in the milk to incorporate well.
  3. Turn the heat to medium and whisk constantly until the mixture begins to bubble. About 5 minutes. Turn the heat to low and continue to whisk until the mixture has thickened. This should take about 5 more minutes.
  4. Turn the heat off and whisk in the butter until it is fully melted.
  5. Pour the mixture into a serving bowl or gravy boat and serve.

  • I like to serve this with biscuits, pancakes, or waffles. I typically do not serve any maple syrup with this as this is really sweet and it will not need any extra syrups.
  • This will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week.
  • If you want to try to cut down on some of the richness of the gravy you can pair your breakfast with some fresh fruit like strawberries or blueberries. Any fruit will do or whatever fruit you like or prefer.
