I think this is my favorite BBQ Sauce. It is so easy to make and it is so good. I created this BBQ Sauce many years ago (about 20+ yrs ago), which I gravitate toward if I make my own sauce. It keeps well in the fridge for up to 2 weeks and you can freeze it or process it for food storage.
This sauce is a sweet BBQ Sauce with a slight kick of heat. You can adjust the sweetness and/or the spice level. It checks all the boxes I require for a good BBQ Sauce, in my opinion. lol.
Let me share with you how to make it.
INGREDIENTS:
1 C. Ketchup or Catsup ( I use organic)
1/3 C. Honey
1/2 Stick Butter
Juice Of 1 Lemon
1/4 C. Molasses ( I use Blackstrap)
2 Tbsp. Brown Sugar
2 Tsp. Cornstarch
2 Tsp. Paprika
1 Tsp. Garlic Powder
1 Tsp. Onion Powder
1/4 to 1/2 Tsp. Cayenne Pepper ( to heat preference)
Salt and Pepper ( to taste)
5 drops Hickory Or Mesquite Smoke Flavor
DIRECTIONS:
- In a small saucepan combine all of the ingredients. Whisk to combine well.
- Place on the stove and turn the heat to medium-low heat. Whisk or stir to combine. Cook for about 10 minutes. The color will darken and the sauce will thicken.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning to taste. If you add more garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, or paprika you will need to cook the sauce an extra 5 minutes.
- Once the flavor is how you like it. Turn the heat off and allow it to cool in the pan for about 30 minutes. At this point, you can use it for any of your BBQ recipes.
- If you plan on processing it for food storage, your jars should be sterilized before starting. The jars should also be hot. Please follow any approved recipes for water canning or pressure canning for BBQ Sauces. I recommend the Ball Blue book. Make sure all methods are up to date.
- If you want to freeze the sauce you can fill a mason jar 3/4 full and attach the lid and ring. Place in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let the sauce thaw in the fridge the day before you plan on using it.
- Keep the sauce in the fridge in a glass container with a tight-fitting lid for up to 1 week.
- You can use this recipe as you would any other style of BBQ Sauce.
